The Mine Health and Safety Council (MHSC) will host its biennial Mine Health and Safety Tripartite Summit in September, bringing together the State, Organised Labour, and Employers to review health and safety in the South African Mining Industry (SAMI).

The 2024 Summit reviewed the 10-year health and safety milestones set in 2014 and developed new milestones to address ongoing and emerging challenges beyond 2024.

This year’s Summit will assess industry progress, discuss challenges, and share best practices for achieving the October 2024 milestones. The industry will also commemorate Mining Disasters to remember and honour our colleagues who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The Indaba will provide a strategic platform to engage on Mine Health and Safety (MHS) matters affecting women in the mining sector, aiming to identify practical interventions that strengthen health, safety, and security outcomes. Through its Women in Mining Advisory Committee (WIMAC), MHSC continues to champion initiatives addressing challenges faced by women in mining, including workplace safety, security, and the prevention of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

As women’s participation in mining grows, the Indaba will serve as a forum for industry leaders to share experiences and accelerate progress toward Zero Harm, ensuring every mine worker returns home unharmed.

PURPOSE OF THE WORKSHOP
To reinforce the importance of shaft and winder safety in the South African Mining Industry (SAMI) by promoting the sharing of industry best practices, lessons learnt, and practical experiences. Through collaboration and knowledge exchange, the workshop seeks to strengthen the safe operation and maintenance of shafts and winders, enhance regulatory compliance, and contribute to the prevention of incidents and the protection of Mine Employees.

EUP on behalf of the Mine Health and Safety Council (MHSC) is conducting a study to develop a standard operating procedure (SOP) that will assist in implementing standardised monitoring strategy for respirable crystalline silica (RCS) in the South African Mining Industry (SAMI).

Purpose of the event:
The 7th Mine Health Dialogue seeks to advance the industry’s commitment to achieving Zero Harm in the health and wellbeing of mine workers.

The Dialogue aims to facilitate structured and solution-oriented discussions on critical health challenges impacting the mining sector. It further provides a platform to share practical, evidence-based interventions and best practices to strengthen health outcomes and promote sustainable improvements across the industry.

NB: The workshop will be hybrid, with SIMRAC members attending physically at the Platinum Boardroom, and all other non-SIMRAC members and key external stakeholders joining online.

Renewed efforts and sustainable commitments to end AIDS in the SAMI

Hosted through Mining Occupational Safety Advisory Committee (MOSAC), the workshop aims to foster an
understanding of the Guideline on Road and Rail Safety Management in the South African Mining Industry, which will assist in key decision making in protecting the health and safety of affected mineworkers.

The 13th Joburg Indaba, taking place on 8–9 October 2025 at the Inanda Club, Sandton, is a leading platform for robust discussions on South Africa’s mining sector, featuring top industry leaders and stakeholders.
